Project Background
Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant no.8 (IWTP8) treats effluent from most of the industrial area in the city of Jubail, Saudi Arabia. The plant comprises three parallel streams; stream 2 was based on the activated sludge process and treated around 25 MLD to the Saudi RCER-1999 Irrigation Water standard. Bluewater Bio, working through local main contractor Tunisian Saudi for Projects Co. Ltd (EPPM), completed a HYBACS upgrade,
doubling the capacity to 50 MLD.
The upgrade involved the installation of 16 SMART units on a steel platform, built to enable gravity flow through the process. Installation and commissioning of the SMART units took just 3 weeks and the HYBACS upgrade was completed in March 2019. Bluewater Bio and EPPM have an extendable 3-year service and maintenance contract for the plant, which is operated by MaSa, a joint venture between Marafiq and Saur.
